Superintendent Dr. Engel on potential closing of two La Crosse elementary schools
School District of La Crosse Superintendent, Dr. Aaron Engel, joined La Crosse Talk PM on Thursday to discuss a committee’s final report into the potential closing of two elementary schools — North Woods and Hintgen — how/why that decision came about and the next steps in the process.
La Crosse Talk PM airs weekdays at 5:06 p.m. Listen on the WIZM app, online here, or on 92.3 FM / 1410 AM / 106.7 FM (north of Onalaska). Find all the podcasts here or subscribe to La Crosse Talk PM wherever you get your podcasts.
This week, a community compiled Facilities Advisory Committee (FAC) released its final report on school consolidation, after eight-plus months of work.
Engel discussed the factors the district is facing in needing to consolidate, as well as the factors the FAC took into account in coming to its final conclusion.
We also talked about the next steps, which include public comment sessions on Nov. 27 (online) and Nov. 29, at the Hogan Administrative Center (map), as well as what the La Crosse School Board has in store over the next few months leading up to a potential decision to close the two elementary schools.

The school board needs to step up and either get this guy under control or replace him.
The District’s student count was down 174 this year but 95 of them left through open enrollment to attend other districts (mostly Onalaska). Parents are moving their students because the school board is not doing its job, choosing all this unnecessary turmoil instead.

Schools are closing all over the country because couples are not having more than One child and Abortion has killed over 65 million innocent babies in the U.S. These are the sad reasons why schools are closing.

Over half of the 174 student decrease in La Crosse schools this year is due to families opting to send their children to other districts through open enrollment. This has nothing to do with demographics and seems to indicate La Crosse schools are not the place to be.

Just a thought.
If the school district is strapped for cash, including lack of operating funds and no money to build a new single high school for the community, why not sell Emerson School to the University of La Crosse?
It is a prime piece of property located next to the university.
The state has deep pockets and would probably be more than happy to have that piece of property for future expansion. Is closing Northwoods because more kids would have to be put on a bus the same argument you could raise if kids who don’t live close to Emerson would have to be bussed?
I am still waiting for the bake sale / car wash to raise the money the city lost. Do you remember that the La Crosse School Superintendent and all the people who voted for putting down a cash deposit on the Trane Company property that the tax payers did not get to vote for!
