Schmidty’s in La Crosse announces plan to close in January; owners seeking new buyer

A popular La Crosse restaurant is scheduled to close at year’s end, after 68 years in business.

Schmidty’s Bar and Restaurant on State Road announced on social media that it will close on New Year’s Day. The announcement was confirmed by restaurant staff.

In the announcement, owner Bob Schmidt said the restaurant is for sale.

Schmidt added that he hopes to find a buyer who would retain some of the current Schmidty’s employees, and continue practices that have made the business successful.

A native of Prairie du Chien, Brad graduated from UW - La Crosse and has worked in radio news for more than 30 years, mostly in the La Crosse area. He regularly covers local courts and city and county government. Brad produces the features "Yesterday in La Crosse" and "What's Buried on Brad's Desk." He also writes the website "Triviazoids," which finds odd connections between events that happen on a certain date, and he writes and performs with the local comedy group Heart of La Crosse. Brad been featured on several national TV programs because of his memory skills.
