Committee shifts $425,000 in repair funds from one La Crosse pool to another
It may be almost Christmas but swimming pool needs for next summer are on the minds of La Crosse’s parks, recreation and forestry staff.
The city council’s Finance and Personnel Committee on Thursday gave the OK to transfer $425,000 in funding originally set aside for the north side swimming pool to pay for work on Erickson pool, near Losey Boulevard.
Dan Trussoni from the parks department told the committee that the extra funding allocated for Erickson still might not be enough to meet rising maintenance costs.
“I met on site with a company that specializes in pool liners,” Trussoni said. “We spoke with them two years ago about this, and they said it was somewhere between $50,000 to $100,000. Now that number has climbed anywhere close to $350,000.”
Trussoni added that the Northside Community Pool sees about 5,000 visitors a season, while Erickson gets three times that number.
Erickson would be closed for much of next summer by the maintenance project, where work is needed to fix a deteriorating surge tank wall.
He said Erickson and Northside are both in “dire need” of repairs. The city’s third outdoor pool, Memorial, was upgraded a few years ago.
The funding transfer goes to the full city council at Thursday’s 6 p.m. December meeting next week.

The price escalation is ridiculous. Did they get competing bids? Doesn’t sound like it. Will this be another boondoggle project like the La Crosse Center, Riverside park dock, Riverside park fish hatchery building, Burns park, etc., that go on forever? Five months to repair a tank wall?
Oh, I almost forget the $11 million over-run on the wastewater plant.

When they built the new memorial pool I was told it wasn’t heated.does anyone know if this is true a what a waste of time doing all that work and not heating it. I can remember swimming back when they used to post a rediculous number of how cold the pool water was an that day. It was a very cold watered pool. Not very pleasant to swim in. Just wondering ????

Why can’t the contractors start now instead of doing the work in the summer? Its only 50 degrees outside.
After revised bids are received, of course.
