A change of ownership is in the works for Schmidty’s bar and restaurant in La Crosse.

The owners of Digger’s Sting, Who’s on Third, and the Eagles Nest have applied to City Hall for a liquor license to operate Schmidty’s on State Road.

The license application from Tim Hesse is on the agenda for special city council meetings next week.

The current owner of Schmidty’s, Bob Schmidt, recently announced that he was planning to retire and close on New Year’s Day, after 68 years in business, unless they found a buyer to keep it open.

Hesse told WIZM News in Thursday he would plan to make few changes to the place but keep the Schmidty’s name.

He said Schmidty’s has been a favorite restaurant of his family, especially his grandparents.
