A change in ownership at Schmidty’s Bar and Restaurant in La Crosse received assistance from City Hall.

During two short meetings Thursday, city council members approved a liquor license for the new owners to operate the popular establishment on Highway 33.

The long-time owners of Schmidty’s recently announced their plans to retire. The owners of Digger’s Sting and the Eagles Nest in La Crosse applied for licenses to keep the business open.

Special council meetings were called for the licensing process, because the licenses had to be approved so the bar can remain open through the holidays.

The Schmidt family had intended to close the business for good on New Year’s Day, before the purchase offer was made.
