La Crosse city officials are supporting the plan to demolish the former Macy’s store at Valley View Mall and replace it with three “quick serve” restaurants, a car wash and 105 parking spaces.

The proposal was accepted Tuesday by the City Plan Commission and the city council Judiciary and Administration committee.

City planner Andrea Trane said there are still formalities to take care of in the process with the current owners of the mall.

According to documents on the city’s website, the Macy’s store could be torn down between February and May. New businesses described as a coffee shop, an Asian restaurant, and a Raising Cane’s franchise.

Plan commission member Elaine Yager hopes that the mall property won’t be randomly split.

“My concern is that we allow these things to happen and that huge piece of property out there is just going to become this hodgepodge of things,” Yager said.

The former Macy’s is the second anchor space at Valley View to be replaced. The original Sears store at the mall was converted to a Hy-Vee supermarket.

The Macy’s storefront also has housed Dayton’s, Marshall Field and Herbergers since the mall opened in 1980.
