Storm brings La Crosse first 2-inch snowfall since April, sub-zero temps to follow

Before this week, the last time La Crosse had at least 2 inches of snow in one day was last April, a week after Easter.

The city got 9 inches over a two-day period last April. And that snowfall happened less than a week after 90-degree weather.

Meteorologist Mike Kurz with the National Weather Service in La Crosse said it’s quite unusual not to have a 2-inch snowfall until January.

“Usually by December, at the latest, usually we’ve already got at least a couple inches from a snow event, so we just kind of got nickel-and-dimed with very small amounts,” Kurz said.

La Crosse got between 1 and 2 inches of snow each of the past three months, for a total of less than 5 inches for the season before Tuesday’s storm.

Kurz said “real cold” weather will set in over the next week or two with La Crosse getting its first sub-zero temps of the winter by this weekend.

“It does look like it’s gonna be noticeably much colder across the region,” Kurz said, “and sub-zero low temperatures aren’t out of the question either.”

The last daily low below zero in La Crosse was minus-4, late last February.
