Co-responder funding gets approval from La Crosse County Board

State money for mental health programs in La Crosse County was approved Thursday by the county board.

Just over $150,000 in funding money was accepted by the board for what’s called a Connect and Protect grant.

The money comes from a state grant already allocated to the City of La Crosse.

It will help expand the hours of the co-responder units, where La Crosse city police and county mental health workers ride together to respond to emergency situations.

The hours will be from noon to 9 p.m., expanded from 4 p.m.

The city received state funding of $369,000 over three years for the co-responder program. It has been in operation since 2020.

In other action, the county board is delaying a vote on authorizing new routes for all-terrain vehicles.

Some board members say they want more information from towns where the proposed routes are located, before they approve those ATV paths that would follow state highways and county roads. The issue could come up for a board vote in March.
