Wisconsin state Sen. Brad Pfaff in the WIZM studio for La Crosse Talk PM on Jan. 22, 2024.

Wisconsin state Sen. Brad Pfaff in studio discussing the peculiar timing of a vote in the Legislature for the “Iowa model” of drawing voting maps. We also took a ton of calls on budget surplus, government priorities, and Pfaff proposals that aren’t getting committee hearings.

La Crosse Talk PM airs weekdays at 5:06 p.m. Listen on the WIZM app, online here, or on 92.3 FM / 1410 AM / 106.7 FM (north of Onalaska). Find all the podcasts here or subscribe to La Crosse Talk PM wherever you get your podcasts.

Began the show, though, talking about legislation Pfaff helped get passed renaming a portion of I-90 the “Ho-Chunk World War II Code Talkers Memorial Highway” in honor of the 14 WWII veterans from the Ho-Chunk Nation that have been recognized as Code Talkers. And, we discussed how these are sometimes the only things that government can do.

We then got more into the electoral college and how it’s not representing states in a totally different way — where a majority of campaign and ad money now only flows to the 50-50 states, like Wisconsin. That was a lead in to talking about the Wisconsin Supreme Court ordering new voting maps and the timing of which Republicans have now proposed a new way to draw maps.

We also discussed the budget surplus and priorities Pfaff would like to see it used for, plus legislation he has proposed that can’t even get a committee hearing. All while the GOP in the state is voting on 14-week abortion bans, a “parental bill of rights” and this new system to drawing maps — all things the governor has already said he’d veto it.

Interesting comment from a listener about our Democratic party creating social issues and having government use tax payers money. Then Brad wants government to price control insulin and child care. Interesting if he thinks government should control a business. I wonder if he would agree to price control on what a farmer can charge for milk. I think no family should have to pay no more than 25 cents a gallon without the government subsidizing it.

Apparently Pfaff’s ideas are not valued. Go figure.

Maybe he can provide a short list of “problems solved” by Progressive ideas?

I believe that Brad believes he is doing the right things for people. I am slowly beginning to believe my Democrat party is losing it’s way. The join economic committee show that price controlling leads to lower prices for some consumers BUT also cause shortages which lead to arbitrary rationing and, over time, reduce product innovation and quality. What if the government came in and capped what WIZM (Mid-West Family Broadcasting) is only allowed to charge every advertiser at $10, that is what Brad P. is proposing for insulin. He also states that child care should be paid or subsidized as people can not afford it. Some families make a CHOICE to have 3,4, and 5 children, some families make a choice to buy 3,4, and 5 cars. Should all of the WIZM listeners be made to contribute to families that CHOOSE to outspend their income level? I wonder what Brad would say if the government came in and capped the price his family dairy could charge at 25 cents a gallon for their milk (just as he promotes government capping $35 insulin) could their business survive? Very interesting to see how no fiscally responsible my party is leaning.
