As I See It

Record warmth has us all confused

Some weather we’re having, isn’t it? Call it the winter that wasn’t. This is the mildest winter I can recall during my 35 years in Wisconsin. It isn’t just a warmer than normal day once in a while. We have had sustained warm weather, and we’ve set many records along the way. Yesterday we were targeting the all-time warmest February day in La Crosse.  This isn’t a one-off. All but three days this month have seen temperatures reach normal or higher. So much for a brutal Wisconsin winter. Of course we could still get a foot of snow in March, although the ten day forecast calls for above normal temperatures into the month of March. The warm weather pattern is being attributed to an El Nino, but some suggest climate change is also a factor. It is impossible for any of us to say for certain that climate change is responsible for our winter heatwave, but we also can’t definitively say it isn’t to blame. And keep in mind many of the hottest months we have seen have been in recent years. It is very unusual, and confusing. The birds are confused as they fly north earlier than normal, but my plants are confused, thinking its time to bloom. It is hard to complain about this heat wave, and I hate to look a gift horse in the mouth. My energy bill certainly likes this weather, but with people wearing shorts and riding motorcycles in February, I can’t help but wonder if we are going to see a 100 degree day in March.

Confused about what, weather? A changing climate? A warm spell? What you can personally do to stop warm spells, ocean currents, etc…..

Do people not study history, beyond the history of who shot whom and when they shot them, when the guillotines were brought out, when the boats sailed across the oceans, who planted what flag where and when, who is indigenous on this ball of rock (hint, we all are).

Seriously, there is natural history that is longer than 100 years, 1000 years, even 10000 years. Climate changes, sometimes for a long duration, sometimes for a short duration. Our role on this ball of rock is to live to the greater glory of God, be good stewards, attempt to love one another, and adapt to the ever changing climate, using God’s gifts; political, environmental, financial, etc…..

Quit running about claiming the sky is falling, it adds no value, other than drama.

…”Suggests”…”not for certain”…”can’t prove it isn’t” (global warming)…”confused” and “wondering.” Not very compelling statements for the Global Warming crowd. Hilarious for the rest of us.

It occurs to me the election deniers brought more than that (much more).
