A drop of 58 degrees in temperature between mid-Tuesday to Wednesday morning in La Crosse — from 69 degrees, down to 11.

That type of measurement’s only been recorded since 1948, and the 58 degree drop was the largest ever, and it may even date back much much further, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) La Crosse.

“Even a cursory look through the daily temperature records back to 1896, there are no dates where there was such a large spread between the daily high and low temperatures,” NWS posted.

While bitter cold followed those unusually high temps, there will be another upswing beginning Thursday that could break records again by the weekend.

NWS sees the area hitting 70 degrees by then.

The above graph is derived from hourly temperature measurements. The high of 69 fell between the hourly reports, which is why it shows a max temperature of 68 and a difference of 57 degrees (National Weather Service La Crosse)
