Loggers prepare for annual Stroke Survivor Night in July

La Crosse’s two hospitals and the Loggers baseball team are getting together this summer to call attention to the risk of strokes, as Stroke Awareness Month is observed throughout May.

The ballclub has a yearly stroke survivor night at Copeland Park, to recognize people who have recovered from strokes. Helping raise awareness of the illness is Larry Frohmader, who is recovering from a stroke he had in March. Larry recalls how the medical team at Mayo in La Crosse jumped into action when he checked in after his stroke.

“I realized it very shortly” that it was probably a stroke, Larry tells reporters. “So I called and cancelled my luncheon plans with my sister, and she wanted to know why, and I said because I’ve had a stroke. And she says, ‘What?'” His sister, Peggy Beahm, accompanied Larry to the event at Logger Field on Wednesday.

Larry went to Mayo in La Crosse for rapid treatment. He was unable to use his left hand after the stroke, but says that hand is fine now.

The Stroke Survivor Night at Logger Field happens this year on July 17th, when La Crosse hosts the Duluth Huskies.
