You could soon see more garden space, and a possible memorial, on the former Naval Reserve property in La Crosse.

The city finance committee has approved a resolution to waive plans for a memorial on the former reserve center site along Green Bay Street. The Navy building was demolished two decades ago, and a pocket neighborhood has been developed on that block.

The portion of the block that had been set aside for a proposed city memorial to the naval center would be transferred to a developer. The full city council is expected to vote on the plan next week.

In other business on Thursday, the committee authorized the purchase of five new diesel buses for the MTU. Transit director Adam Lorentz tells the committee that the average useful life of a city bus is 12 years, and 9 of the buses in the La Crosse fleet have passed that 12-year mark.

The MTU also has two electric buses, but Lorentz says the wait for a new electric vehicle can take several months, so diesel buses remain in demand.
