More boundary changes approved in La Crosse voting districts; city council changes some beer garden regulations

Some district boundaries in the city of La Crosse are being changed, ahead of the next elections.

On Thursday, the city council approved new maps, based on legislative revisions in Madison.

“We did go through a redistricting process in 2021,” city clerk Nikki Elsen told the council. “Since then, the legislative maps have been challenged at the state level, just finally being approved a little earlier.”

Elsen added that some of the wards in the city were split by new Assembly district lines.

“Wards cannot be split,” she noted. “That is a state law, so we did have to make some adjustments to our boundaries to accommodate those splits.”

The maps had to be redrawn for districts 1, 2, 3, 6 and 8. The changed lines would affect the April 2025 election for La Crosse council members.

In other council business Thursday, standard fencing rules for beer gardens in La Crosse were approved.

All commercial beer gardens in the city will have fences or barriers of a minimum height of 3.5 feet.

Until now, those fences had to be at least 6 feet high. Hedges and stone walls may also be used as barriers for beer gardens.
