A leadership change announced two months ago by the Diocese of La Crosse will take effect Monday.

St. Joseph the Workman Cathedral will host an 11 a.m. installation ceremony for incoming Bishop, Gerard Battersby, who comes to La Crosse from Detroit.

Battersby was chosen for the post by the Vatican in March when William Callahan announced his retirement after 14 years as bishop for health reasons.

When he was introduced to local Catholics on that occasion, Battersby told reporters he felt like his world was “blown up” upon receiving news of his appointment. He said that getting the new assignment was a “beautiful thing.”

Callahan performed his final regular Sunday mass as La Crosse bishop last weekend.
