27-year-old Holmen woman reaches guilty plea for reckless homicide

A 27-year-old Holmen, Wis., woman will avoid a trial for reckless homicide, after reaching a plea agreement before a La Crosse County judge Tuesday.

Rachel Brockway entered the plea, admitting to providing a mix of drugs to her boyfriend in February of last year.

The man died after taking the drugs in a parking lot. An autopsy found both fentanyl and heroin in his body.

A lesser drug charge against Brockway was dismissed as part of the negotiated plea.

The reckless homicide charge carries a maximum sentence of 46 years, but Brockway is expected to get a lesser sentence.

Brockway will have a two-hour sentencing hearing before Judge Scott Horne on Oct. 1.

A native of Prairie du Chien, Brad graduated from UW - La Crosse and has worked in radio news for more than 30 years, mostly in the La Crosse area. He regularly covers local courts and city and county government. Brad produces the features "Yesterday in La Crosse" and "What's Buried on Brad's Desk." He also writes the website "Triviazoids," which finds odd connections between events that happen on a certain date, and he writes and performs with the local comedy group Heart of La Crosse. Brad been featured on several national TV programs because of his memory skills.
