UPDATE: Winona police say “shelter in place” was not for active shooter, but an assault, and have found suspect
Confusion yesterday evening about a shelter in place in Winona, but the suspect it was looking for was found thanks to help from the community.
Police had been looking for 25-year-old Stig Ure, for a suspected assault.\
A shelter-in-place order was enacted but, instead of just going to a portion of the community, it went county wide, and police said it will work on that.
The suspect allegedly assaulted someone with a sharp object and ran. That’s why a shelter in place was ordered.
“Due to the serious nature of the assault, the Winona Police Department requested residents in the area shelter in place while officers searched for the suspect,” Winona police stated.
The victim received non-life threatening injuries.
About four hours later, someone called police with Ure’s location.
Called after seeing “a suspicious male crawling in the weeds along the 1100 block of Highway 61. Ure was subsequently located and taken into custody,” Winona police stated.
Police issued this statement later:
