Every summer, kids from around the La Crosse area get together to compete with each other on the athletic field.

On Friday, they represented different Boys and Girls Clubs at the annual Summer Showdown for this year happened on Friday at Swanson Field, outside Logan High School. The event attracted more than 400 young people, and Andy Kiel with the Boys and Girls Clubs says one event is a clear favorite.

“Our favorite is the relay race where a staff, a team member, a third, fourth, and fifth grader, and then a first or second grader all run in a relay race, and the first graders bring it home,” said Kiel.

The West Salem and Holmen clubs were also represented at the showdown.

Kiel said the purpose of the Showdown is to bring kids together from throughout the area clubs. “to have a fun team-building event, where we compete against each other in spirit contests and relay races. But ultimately, it’s just a fun experience for our kids, to see all thge kids that we serve in our organization.”

Besides the track and field activities, club members and staffers also took part in a tug of war competition in front of the Swanson Field bleachers.
