No more vacant Shopkos, after south side La Crosse Aldi grocery store opens next week

Another Shopko conversion is almost done in La Crosse. The city is getting its first Aldi discount grocery store.

Aldi will open July 25, replacing the old Shopko at 4344 Mormon Coulee Road. A ribbon cutting is scheduled for 8 a.m.

The first 100 customers will receive a gift bag of store product samples, plus a gift card. Customers that day can also get a free tote, while supplies last.

The La Crosse Aldi will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. after the grand opening.

The store could employ around 15-20 workers. The store lists full-time associates and part-time associates/stocker/cashiers for job openings. Both starting at $17 an hour.

This will be the second Aldi in the area, as there is another in Onalaska.

Shopko at the Mormon Coulee location closed in 2019 — the last of the bankruptcies from the company coming at that time. The building was then bought in October of 2022.

That means all three La Crosse area Shopkos will no longer be vacant. The former Shopko in Onalaska, by the mall, was converted into five different stores, including a T.J. Maxx.

The Bridgeview Plaza former Shopko was converted into Blue Zone Pickleball.
