La Crosse’s old fire station on Monitor Street is being put up for sale.

The city’s Board of Public Works reviewed a resolution Monday to seek offers for the surplus property.

“This’ll be advertised in the newspaper, and then also with a ‘for sale’ sign,” Andrea Trane, the city’s Director of Planning, Development and Assessment, told the board. “Then, the Board of Public Works will receive offers for that, after a certain period of time,” before providing a recommendation to the city council.

The old firehouse, serving La Crosse’s north side, was built in 1956.

It was replaced with a new station on La Crosse Street, near the UW-La Crosse campus, and opened last year.

City leaders plan to retain property near the old building, which could be used for a levee, along the La Crosse River.
