Two cats rescued and all residents “accounted for,” after a second-floor apartment fire Thursday on the north side of La Crosse.

The La Crosse Fire Department said it took over two hours to contain the fire that caused “moderate to heavy fire and smoke damage.”

It was the second fire the department battled in about a two-hour span.

The cause of the Caledonia Street fire is still being determined. How many residents lived in the two-story building that appears to have businesses on the first floor, was unknown.

The call came in around 7 p.m. and crews were there within 3 minutes, the department said, adding 20 firefighters responded.
