As I See It

Let the voters decide

There are plenty of rules when it comes to elections. And I suppose rules have to be followed. But some don’t make sense. A complaint has been filed with the state Elections Commission, seeking to keep the Green Party’s presidential candidate off the November ballot. The complaint alleges the party can’t put someone on the ballot because they don’t have eligible electors to nominate them. That is because the Green Party has no members holding any statewide office, and no Green Party candidates ran for the Legislature this fall. It is hard to find electors when you don’t have any candidates in office, but hard to get electors without getting into office. The tail is chasing the dog. But the party did qualify to be on the ballot after one Green candidate got more than one percent of the vote in the 2022 election. No one disputes they qualify to have a candidate on the 2024 ballot, but now the Wisconsin Elections Commission must sort out the elector issue. Other efforts are trying to keep the name of other candidates, like Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Cornell West, off the ballot in Wisconsin as well. It just seems rather, well, undemocratic. Just put the names on the ballot, and let voters decide.

So you now recognize the many barriers placed in front of so-called lesser candidates. If you think that’s anti-Democratic, I again encourage you to work with the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association (WBA) to get them to allow every candidate on the ballot to participate in the Wisconsin debate instead of putting arbitrary criteria in place to prevent their participation.

    WIZM Rumpelstiltskin or Ret Con?

While both parties would just as soon see RFK quit his campaign, the Dems have been waging lawfare against RFK for the last two years. Progressive outfits like MoveOn are still trying to keep RFK off the ballot in key states like WI and PA, but also in Dem states like NY. For a small outfit like RFKs campaign, the diversion of time and dollars to fight law suits undermines its viability.

And then there is the denial of secret service protection for RFK. Trump was finally able to shame Biden/Harris into providing protection to RFK after he himself was wounded.

Those people screaming incessantly to be “defenders of democracy” are those most threatening to its very survival. Go figure.
