A competency exam has been ordered for a 45-year-old La Crosse man charged with the stabbing death of his roommate at a mobile home park.

Stumlin

John Stumlin was arrested this month for the murder of Daniel Riordan, and for hiding the victim’s body at the south La Crosse mobile home park where they lived.

Stumlin is in the county jail, with cash bond set at $1 million.

Judge Scott Horne found probable cause to permit an examination.

He said the evaluation should be performed within the next 15 days.

A defense request to reduce Stumlin’s bond may be considered after the evaluation is done.

The next hearing in the case is scheduled for Sept. 18, by which time the evaluation should be complete.
