National champion UW-Whitewater gymnast Kara Welsh was shot and killed Friday night near campus.

The only details police released were that Welsch and a 23-year-old man, who was taken into custody and is in Walworth County jail, were involved in an altercation that evolved into a shooting. The two did know each other.

Welsch, 21-year-old from Plainfield, Ill., who was majoring in management, won the NCAA Division III vault title last season.

Among the charges being sought are first-degree murder.

The investigation will continue, as police ask for the public’s help in gathering information.
