Another cleanup of homeless encampments began Monday in La Crosse.

City police and other authorities, including the Wisconsin State Patrol, began removing tents and other items from the Black River shore along Rose Street, which is part of U.S. Highway 53 through the north side of La Crosse.

Crews and police clean up homeless encampments on La Crosse’s north side on Oct. 7, 2024.

People who have been camping between Rose Street and the river were notified several days ago that a removal effort would happen on Oct. 7.

Authorities estimate that 30 to 40 people had been living in the woods on the riverfront recently.

Large dumpsters have been placed near the highway for disposal of items removed from the area.

A similar cleanup happened in late August on the marsh trails just north of Riverside Park, after the city council approved legislation prior to that to make camping on city-owned property illegal.

And, back in March, La Crosse Mayor Mitch Reynolds wrote that about 130 tons of abandoned items over two days were removed from several areas of public land along the Black River shoreline further south from Monday’s efforts.
