Repeal ACA? Show me something better

In baseball, you wouldn’t pull the starting pitcher before the reliever is warmed up and ready to go. You probably wouldn’t throw away an old wallet until you had a new one to replace it. And you probably wouldn’t dump your cell phone provider until you had selected another. Why then should we dump the Affordable Care Act without something better to replace it? We shouldn’t but that doesn’t stop some politicians from calling for the repeal of the ACA, without any plan that is better to replace it. We heard that on the debate stage from Donald Trump who criticized the Affordable Care Act but when pressed what he would offer instead could only say he had a concept of a plan. Republicans who deride Obamacare have had years to come up with a replacement that would be better for Americans, but have failed to do so. Wisconsin Senate candidate Eric Hovde is the latest to call for a full repeal of ACA, even without another plan in place. He is doubling down on his criticism, calling for repealing the law in its entirety. Hovde calls the provision of the law that allows young people to stay on their family’s health plan until age 26 “a stupid idea” that makes Wisconsinites lazy. And he wants the nation’s health insurance companies to be able to dump coverage, or charge significantly more, for people with pre-existing conditions. Our elected officials should be working to improve our health care system, but repealing ACA without another plan in the bullpen is not a game-winning strategy.

Trump said in the debate with Harris that he would not repeal the ACA unless something more effective and affordable was developed to take its place. Presumedly, Democrats would also be on board with a program more effective and affordable.
