As I See It

Don’t end filibusters

Donald Trump and Kamala Harris agree on at least one thing. Both want to change the rules and get rid of filibusters. But both are wrong. The use of filibusters may seem like a tactic for obstruction, and in some cases that is true. Ted Cruz once spent 21 hours on the floor of the Senate reading Dr. Seuss books to try to force the defunding of Obamacare. But by and large, filibusters force compromise on contentious issues. Kamala Harris wants to carve out some exceptions for filibusters to codify Roe vs Wade nationwide. When he was in office, Donald Trump urged Republicans to get rid of filibusters while they held the majority. Filibusters require the U.S. Senate to get 60 votes, not a simple majority, to pass legislation. In many cases, the higher threshold forces members of Congress from both parties to compromise in order to get a bill passed. The party in control much reach out to the other side. This typically means moderating the bill to make it more acceptable to both parties. That is a good thing. It forces more broadly acceptable legislation rather than a more extreme bill which barely passes. Filibusters can be misused and delay progress, but they also play an important role in crafting and ultimately passing legislation.

Harris is currently and actively advocating for ending the filibuster as a means to then pack the Supreme Court. That is usually just before she breaks into weird laughter.

I have not heard Trump advocate for ending the filibuster. He did threaten it in 2018 as part of negotiations with Congress, but never followed through.

    Big difference.

Meanwhile, Dem senators are threatening to not certify the election if Trump wins. Dem democracy in action.

Then, Scott, I hope you’ll do your part by voting for Eric Hovde for US Senate. Hovde’s opponent, Tammy Baldwin, is much more likely to march to the music of Chuck Schumer-Democrat-who wants to eliminate the filibuster….along with stacking the Supreme Court, eliminating the Electoral College so New York, California and Texas run the country and anything else that would pre-empt the Senate candidacy of Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, commonly known as AOC.

The filibuster is ssential. Two Democratic senators, Manchin and Sinema, saved this country from even more economic distress. We need to elect representatives and senators who are going to do what is right for the country and not the party.
Unfortunately, they are getting really hard to find.
Send the message and vote all incumbents out.
All Schumer talks about is packing the Supreme Court. The writer above failed to mention Illinois.
Do away with the Electoral College as the left wants and millions including voters in Wisconsin are dis-enfranchised.
You really want a few states running this country?
The founding fathers recognized the problem and made sure by creating the electoral college it would not happen.

Joe Manchin and Kristen Sinema combined to thwart the progressives and saved the country from an even worse economy than we had under Biden-Harris.
End the filibuster and democracy will end.
The Electoral college will go and millions of voters including those in Wisconsin will be dis-enfranchised.
Hilary Clinton won the popular vote because of idiots in New York and California.
Chicago Democrats have ruined Illinois. Democrats in New Jersey have done the same to that state.
We need senators and congresspeople who put the country first and not party.
Baldwin is an absolute disgrace. Schumer says jump and she says how high.
