Cole pleading not guilty to attempted murder and other charges, still without leaving his jail cell

The suspect in a La Crosse attempted murder case is pleading not guilty to six criminal charges. But when Freeman Cole had a court hearing on Friday, he did not enter the pleas in person.

Cole continues to refuse to leave his jail cell to take part in court proceedings, and his attorney entered the not guilty pleas for him last week. In Judge Gloria Doyle’s courtroom, a video camera showed the closed door to Cole’s cell.

Cole is charged with trying to strangle a woman in October of last year, inside a storage unit on the south side of La Crosse. The suspect fled after witnesses discovered him with the victim, and he was arrested out-of-state a few days later. On Friday,
