La Crosse County clerk says a third already voted before election day, yet lines are steady Tuesday

More than a third of eligible voters in La Crosse County had already cast ballots in the election before polls opened Tuesday, according to county clerk Ginny Dankmeyer.

The clerk says 36,000 in the county had cast absentee votes out of 99,000 people eligible to vote.

Dankmeyer said some polling places had long lines before they opened at 7 a.m., but turnout has been steady since then in much of the county. Polls close at 8 p.m.

The all-time record for turnout in La Crosse County was set during the last presidential election in 2020, with 89 percent casting ballots.
