Coulee Region prepares for sub-zero temps, less than a week after highs in the 50s
Christmas is just two weeks away, but it didn’t feel like winter in the Coulee Region this weekend.
Saturday’s high of 56 in La Crosse was one degree short of a record for Dec. 7. That was followed by a high of 53 on Sunday.
National Weather Service La Crosse forecaster Joseph Ricciotti joined La Crosse Talk on Monday.
La Crosse Talk airs weekdays at 6-8 a.m. Listen on the WIZM app, online here, or on 92.3 FM / 1410 AM / 106.7 FM (north of Onalaska). Find all the podcasts here or subscribe to La Crosse Talk PM wherever you get your podcasts.
He said southern storm systems helped bring the region warm weather but a cold front from Canada could push the mercury well below zero by Wednesday night — with a high of just 10 above in La Crosse on Thursday, even if there’s not much wind.
Ricciotti expects “below negative 20 degrees” in many places, “20 to 25 below zero.”
“While the winds aren’t very strong, the temperatures are already very low,” Ricciotti added.
Temperatures never got below zero last December in La Crosse — only getting down to 14 degrees. The area was back to 50-degree temps by the day before Christmas.
This past weekend, the low was down to 30 on both Saturday and Sunday, after the 50-degree days.
