Voters in La Crosse will be electing a new mayor in April, but there are other local races that could attract attention and candidates.

Two current La Crosse School Board members have decided not to run again.

Board president, Dr. Juan Jimenez, declared he will not be a candidate for the upcoming election.

Katie Berkedal also opted not to seek reelection.

A third member, whose term is expiring, Merideth Garcia, will run for a new term.

WIZM asked the school district how many candidates have taken out papers, but that information was not provided.

Every year, three seats on the school board are up for election.

Last spring, just two candidates got on the ballot for three open seats.

After that fact was learned, many people campaigned as write-in candidates to fill the third open seat.

The deadline to file for the school board race is Jan. 7. If there is a primary, that voting period will end Feb. 20.

Perhaps there’s hope, yet. Pray for 3 reasonable, successful- in- a -private- sector occupation, grown-up, courageous people to come forward and replace all three seats. We all know it’s time for a new Chairman. You don’t have to have children currently in the school system. In fact, it’s better if you don’t, sometimes. Thanks for the Christmas gift.
