La Crosse could be adding more polling places for local elections soon.

The city council is being asked to vote this week on adding three new wards, as a result of recent annexations to the city. They would be designated Wards 29 through 31.

One ward would be along the Black River on French Island. Another would be in the area of County Highway B, near North Woods International School. The third new ward would be in the area of the Shrine of Guadalupe, on the south end of the city.

New wards must be created for the annexed areas because under Wisconsin law, city wards cannot cross certain boundaries of districts for federal, state, or county offices. The proposed wards would be added to three existing city council districts in La Crosse, Districts 1, 2, and 13. A vote is expected by the council at its January meeting on Thursday.
