Two candidates are now in the running to succeed a retiring La Crosse County judge.

Eric Sanford, the county’s family court commissioner, has filed papers for the Branch 1 judge’s race. Sanford would join attorney Joe Veenstra on the spring ballot in an election for the seat now held by the retiring Judge Ramona Gonzalez.

Tuesday at 5 p.m. is the filing deadline for the April election. Veenstra announced his campaign last summer.

Two incumbent judges, Elliott Levine and Scott Horne, are expected to run unopposed for reelection in their court branches.
