Evers plans La Crosse visit to discuss violence prevention efforts
Governor Tony Evers has a trip to La Crosse planned for Thursday, as part of a statewide promotion of his newly-created Office of Violence Prevention.
Wisconsin’s Democratic governor has created a new office dedicated to preventing gun violence, a month after a school shooting not far from the state Capitol.
Evers is scheduled to take part in a roundtable talk at Gundersen, also known as Emplify, about the hospital’s services available to crime victims. As part of a statewide tour, the governor also has stops planned during the day in Chetek and Kenosha.
The Legislature has already rejected numerous gun control safety measures put forward by Evers, including universal background checks for gun purchases.
Republican Assembly Speaker Robin Vos blasted the proposal as “not well thought out” and that it will waste time and money and certainly not be putting the effort where it’s deserved.
Gov. Evers says the shooting at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison by a 15-year-old girl who was a student there demonstrates the need for lawmakers to act.
