Elizabeth Sorenson, a forecaster for the National Weather Service – La Crosse, joined to discuss key weather topics, including the region’s last blizzard, the lack of snow this season, and the wild swings in temperature we’re currently experiencing. She also addressed whether the Los Angeles fires might have an impact on the area.

La Crosse Talk airs weekdays at 6-8 a.m. Listen on the WIZM app, online here, or on 92.3 FM / 1410 AM / 106.7 FM (north of Onalaska). Find all the podcasts here or subscribe to La Crosse Talk wherever you get your podcasts.

The conversation began with an update on the “golf ball,” the weather service’s radar atop the bluff, which is currently out of service, and how forecasters are adapting without it.

Sorenson then discussed whether smoke from the LA fires could drift into the La Crosse area and what it might mean for air quality.

Next, she delved into the dramatic temperature fluctuations ahead, with forecasts showing a rollercoaster from below-zero conditions to highs near 40° and then back into negative territory.

She also weighed in on the chances of snowfall — or even a blizzard — in the near future. While Sorenson highlighted last April’s 17-inch snowstorm, her surprising take on when La Crosse last experienced a true blizzard added perspective to the area’s unusual winter trends.
