Sen. Baldwin proposes new bill to give grants to Wisconsin farms and dairy businesses

A new federal bill to offer funding and support for dairy businesses in Wisconsin is being proposed by Senator Tammy Baldwin. The Democratic Senator has introduced the Dairy Business Innovation Act, which would enhance an existing program created by Baldwin seven years ago. During an on-line news conference, Baldwin said proposed tariffs and a potential “trade war” with other countries would not help the Wisconsin dairy industry.
“I was encouraged that people in the American Farm Bureau and the National Association of Manufacturing are coming out and saying exactly what we all know: this will really crush their members, their businesses and workers,” said Baldwin.

The new bill would help provide government grants to farmers and dairy companies, so they can improve and diversify. Baldwin’s proposal is co-sponsored by Republican Senator Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee.
Baldwin says rhe Dairy Business Innovation Act would build upon a current program that supports new farm-related businesses, and encourages changes that can lead to more profits.
“It would keep the program up and running for years to come by authorizing it out into the future,” Baldwin says, “but it also increases the resources that will be available to Wisconsin dairy businesses, as well as those throughout the country who participate in this program.”
The bill is endorsed by producers including Organic Valley, and groups such as the Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation.
