“Typical” turnout expected for Tuesday’s primary election

La Crosse City Clerk Nikki Elsen said that she’s anticipating about a 20 percent turnout for Tuesday’s primary election.
There are three local primary races on Tuesday’s ballot for the city: La Crosse mayor, District 7 city council and the La Crosse School Board.

Only one race appears on all ballots in Wisconsin, and that’s for State Superintendent of Public Instruction.
Elsen said local races typically don’t get the turnout that they do compared to federal races like the ones last November. It’s even less for a spring primary where there may only be a handful of contests on the ballot.
Absentee voting is also down significantly from fall she said.
As of Friday, at noon, the clerk’s office has issued 2,710 absentee ballots with 1,758 returned.
Those figures include those who voted in-person absentee at one of the sites set up by the city that ended at 5 p.m. last Friday.
All absentee ballots need to be turned in by 8 p.m. on Tuesday.
