Drug-related death from 2023 leads to homicide charge against La Crosse man

A 43-year-old La Crosse man faces a reckless homicide charge, in connection with a drug-related death that happened more than a year ago.

Erik Sims is suspected of supplying a deadly dose of fentanyl to a woman who died of an overdose in 2023. A criminal complaint against Sims was filed last month.

Sims has a pre-trial evidence hearing scheduled for March 7th. He was given a $10,000 signature bond, and is ordered to have no contact with the victim’s family.

Sims was convicted in La Crosse County in 2022, in a firearm-related felony case.

A native of Prairie du Chien, Brad graduated from UW - La Crosse and has worked in radio news for more than 30 years, mostly in the La Crosse area. He regularly covers local courts and city and county government. Brad produces the features "Yesterday in La Crosse" and "What's Buried on Brad's Desk." He also writes the website "Triviazoids," which finds odd connections between events that happen on a certain date, and he writes and performs with the local comedy group Heart of La Crosse. Brad been featured on several national TV programs because of his memory skills.
