New housing project in West Avenue area to get more study from La Crosse city committees

About 40 to 50 new housing units are being proposed on the north end of West Avenue in La Crosse.
The planned three-story complex would occupy several parcels on North 12th Street, and have been reviewed this week by both the city plan commission and the common council judiciary committee. Both panels have referred the project to the May cycle of council meetings, partly because the plans reportedly are not complete yet. The housing would be built close to the intersection of West Avenue and Badger Street.
Both committees are considering an ordinance to rezone several properties on a block of West Avenue, for the project. City planner Tim Acklin says 26 off-street parking spaces are included in that development plan. The parcels involved are now zoned for local business, and would be rezoned for neighborhood development. Objections to the current design of the project have focused on changes which would have to be made to water and sewer lines in the area, and on the possibility that up to 50 parking spaces might be needed for the development.
