As I See It
Happy Birthday Robert Witt

I had the opportunity to speak with a gentleman last week who is about to turn 100 years old.
Surrounded by family, Robert Witt shared stories of his life and how the city has changed since he was born.
He talked about riding a horse around the south side and how common it was back then. Of having big blocks of ice delivered by a wagon and a mule to his family’s home for the refrigerator, or ice box, that were cut from the Mississippi River during the winter.
Robert also shared stories of his time during World War II where he served as a guard sailing on Merchant Marine ships that went around the world-not only facing the enemy but hurricanes, too.
Of coming home, starting a career, a home, a family-a son, daughter in law, and grandchildren seated nearby.
Think about all the changes that he’s seen in the past century not only here in the city but of technology and everything else.
With all that change, one thing that doesn’t, and it was apparent when I did the interview, was a love of one’s family.
Thank you Robert, for sharing your story.
And have a Happy Birthday…and many more.
As I See It, I’m Kevin Millard
