Snowmobile trails and solar energy up for discussion by La Crosse city and county leaders on Thursday

La Crosse County may seek money from the state to improve local trails for snowmobiles.
The county board may vote Thursday night on a plan to apply for state funds to maintain 146 miles of snowmobile trails.
A resolution before the board does not specify how much money the county might request, but it says the grant money could be used to reimburse local snowmobile clubs for their own expenses in maintaining the trails. The proposal says that snowmobile trail aids are entirely funded by trail users, because grants to counties are often funded through gas tax and snowmobile registration fees.
In other local government business on Thursday, the city of La Crosse park board could approve a plan to install solar energy panels at the Nature Place in Myrick Park.
A company called Solar Connection has a proposal to place 136 solar energy panels on the Nature Place roof, at an estimated installation cost of $167,000. According to the company, the city could save more than $400,000 in electrical costs over several years by installing the solar panels. According to Solar Connection, installing a solar system at the Myrick building could have the same environmental impact over time as planting over 30,000 trees and driving 3 million fewer miles.
