As I See It
Welcome, Mr. Mayor

This is a historic day for the City of La Crosse.
A new mayor, Shaundel Washington-Spivey, is sworn in this afternoon at City Hall.
As a La Crosse resident, I’m interested to see how the new mayor tries to implement his vision for the city to make life better for everyone on all sides of the political aisle.
That means tackling some challenging issues such as those who are unsheltered. There’s a growing problem with hunger-a rise in the number of people and families needing to use food pantries to get by every month. Do we need a city administrator? Then there are others-property taxes too high, crime, and how can the city grow economically.
For one, I would like to see better streets. I’m not alone on that one.
I’m cynical enough to think that there’s only a short time to make things happen.
I’m optimistic that progress can be made on these and many more issues facing all of us.
And as news director of this station, know that we’ll do our best to hold those in power at city hall accountable for their actions, or inactions.
As I see it, I’m Kevin Millard

Are you more optimistic because it will be a gay, black guy? Because those attributes will provide a better problem solver than all the previous white guys?
Better problem solver than a progressive white, hetero sexual, natural woman?
Better because our community is now enlightened?
What in the world makes you optimistic that these problems are now within reach of a solution?

What a racist, sexist comment, Kevin. Your attitude has no place in this community.

Well Ethan, I didn’t say anything homophobic or racist. He is black, he is ‘openly gay’. Those are facts, read the headlines, read the articles, that is what is advertised and promoted. What I did ask, and say, was what makes a person more optimistic about this fellow, vs the other fellows or gals that either held or were running for that office? I frankly don’t care about any of that crap and prefer your sexual preferences are kept private. I frankly am tired of hearing and reading about everyone’s skin color, and sexual proclivities. What is MAGA about me is outcomes, I am an outcome-based voter. The only thing judgmental I read in this string is your comment. Identity politics, same as empathy, is a poor decision maker.

The current condition and trend line for La Crosse makes one optimistic for only the outlying communities as people who have “had enough” head elsewhere.
In this editorial, and so many others by local media, La Crosse is spoken of as if it is no more than a collection of government and non-profit agencies whose existence transcends and ignores that the bedrock of the community is actually the good, hard working, people who want convenience, safety, good schools and actual reasons for optimism…all lacking a present.
I wish the new mayor good luck; but have heard nothin from him that gives me optimism. It seems just more of the same but “on steroids” is in the offing.
