La Crosse’s city council holding three special meetings on fighting Campbell incorporation

La Crosse doesn’t want the Town of Campbell to incorporate, so at three special meetings Thursday, ahead of the regular meet, members are taking up resolutions to challenge the township’s incorporation and fund the city’s legal efforts to do so.  

Last fall, Campbell filed paperwork to incorporate itself which would nullify annexation efforts.  

The three city meetings take up a resolution offering to annex the nearly 13-square miles of Campbell instead.  

They’d challenge the move for Campbell’s incorporation stating it is “contrary to the interests of the city and the metropolitan area as it will result in duplication of municipal facilities and services. 

Part of the resolution “declares its willingness to annex the territory described in the incorporation petition.”

A second resolution up for a vote would provide $45,000 from the reserve fund to pay for legal expenses related to the incorporation efforts.

Campbell leaders said last fall that incorporating the town would allow them to install their own water system as much of the town’s water contains PFAS chemicals.

The city and township are in the middle of a legal battle over PFAS contamination from firefighting foam used at the La Crosse Regional Airport.
